About Therapeutic Riding

Therapeutic riding is a field in which horses are used as a tool for physical therapy, emotional growth and learning. Many riders experience a connection to the horse that few sports can create. Not only does this help raise their self-esteem but it also teaches them essential skills. It improves balance, creates trust and creates a friendship between rider and horse.

At Stars & Strides Stables, we serve all individuals with physical, intellectual, educational and emotional disabilities.

At Stars & Strides Stables, we believe in the remarkable therapeutic power of the equestrian experience because we believe that students of all ages, backgrounds, and ability levels can benefit from riding and working with the horses at our center.  Whether they have physical, cognitive, sensory or emotional disabilities, we believe that all our students are STARS.

Stars & Strides Stables is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization established in 2012 to give riders with disabilities a place to learn and become effective and competitive equestrians.  Stars & Strides is a PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International) certified facility located in Weatherford, TX.

For children and adults with disabilities, working with horses like ours can be a life changing experience.  In fact, we believe no other therapeutic recreational opportunity offers so many benefits in such a holistic way.  Students will be taught equine care, riding, handling, and management to their best level of ability.

Some of the Stars & Strides students have competed in a variety of equestrian shows for riders with special needs, as well as open, able-bodied horse shows.  Each rider is encouraged to ride independently as soon and as safely as possible.  Parents and riders alike are surprised when they accomplish something they didn't think was possible. Our lesson horses are retired show horses that have experience in all classes.  Classes are offered in a variety of disciplines:  English and Western, including pleasure, trail, and showmanship.

We welcome you to browse this website to check out additional information and learn how you can become part of our ever growing extended family.   Meet our horses and see how you can get involved in assisting us with our mission: Empowering our Stars to reach great Strides in life through the power of the horse.

Patriots Program

The Stars and Strides Patriots Program meets weekly and is open to any veteran who is living with PTSD or has sustained other injuries in connection with military service, regardless of the conflict or circumstance. The Patriots Program includes groundwork and riding. No previous horse experience is necessary and there is no required commitment for attendance.

A variety of interventions are utilized in order to realize the most benefits from an equine program. Veterans have seen improvements in a number of areas include physical strength, movement and balance, communication skills, emotional regulation, focus and concentration, comfort in new situations, trust in others, social interaction, coordination and cooperation, patience and relaxation, motivation and self-esteem, and compassion and empathy.

Veteran volunteers are recruited to support their fellow veterans and a key ingredient in the healing of injured individuals. Having veterans provide moral and physical support to their wounded comrades honors the military philosophy of no one left behind.

This service is completely free to veterans is funded by donations from local and national organizations, foundations, and individuals. If you would like to support our veterans, please click on the Donate button above.
